CONCERT BAND
Concert Band instruction is currently available on three levels, Beginner, and combined Intermediate / Advanced. Beginner Band students need not have any previous musical training at all; we will take them from the “beginning” and teach them both to read music and to develop basic familiarity with their chosen instrument. Students who have taken Beginner Band for one year are then ‘promoted’ (with Director approval) to Intermediate Level Band. We also accept, upon audition, students into Intermediate Band who can read music and have taken at least one year of private music lessons in their chosen instrument. Advanced Band students are by audition only; this will eventually be an independent group but at present rehearses with the Intermediate students, with special sectionals taken for only the Advanced students during the rehearsals.
Beginner Band
Mondays 2:00 – 3:00 pm
Beginner Band is for students with little or no musical training on an instrument. To participate in Beginner Band, students must be at least 9 years old and attend an Instrument Fitting. The Instrument Fitting is a time for your child to see the different instruments under the direction of trained personnel. With the information gathered at this time, we are better able to determine what instrument your child would enjoy playing based on their aptitudes, abilities, and desire. Check our Schedule and Location page to check for more information on Instrument Fittings and directions. If you already have an instrument, please bring it to the fitting. Every effort is made to ensure your child's success and enjoyment.
Note: Beginner Band Percussion students must have at least 1 year experience on piano/ keyboard or other band instrument within the past two years. Audition is required for percussion.
Required Materials: Instrument, Music Stand, Pencil, Standard of Excellence book 1, 1” black binder and plastic sleeves for music, concert dress (see Guidelines and Rules).
Intermediate Band AND Advanced Band

Pending Director approval, last year's beginners will be enrolled in the Intermediate Band unless they have changed to a new instrument. AN AUDITION IS REQUIRED FOR ALL NEW STUDENTS SEEKING TO BE ENROLLED IN THIS BAND! All auditions will take place at the director's discretion. See our Calendar page for details. Check our Schedule and Location page to check for directions.
Required Materials: Instrument, Music Stand, Pencil, Standard of Excellence - Book 2, 1” black binder and plastic sleeves for music, concert dress (see Guidelines ).
RECORDER ENSEMBLES
Recorder classes at beginner and advanced levels are available to give younger home schooled students the opportunity to begin to read music, play real music on the recorder, and understand basic music theory. Students will be taught proper posture, how to read and play music, and instrument care. The recorder class is a great way to introduce your child to basic music principles and basic music appreciation.
BEGINNER RECORDER
Mondays 12:00 – 12:30 pm
Available to children age 6 and up, students will learn note recognition and rhythm. By the end of the year, they will be able to play several songs on a recorder. This is a great way to prepare your child for Beginner Band.
STUDENT REQUIREMENTS: Recorder, Music Stand, Pencil, 1” black binder and plastic sleeves for music, concert dress (see Guidelines).
The music book that your child will need will be determined by the instructor and will be announced on the first day of class.
ADVANCED RECORDER
Mondays 12:30 – 1:00 pm
Advanced Recorder is for those students who have completed at least one year in Beginner Recorder, or who have had private lessons on Recorder, and who are approved by the Director for the class. Students will continue to explore more challenging music, building their music reading and musicianship skills, thus building a strong foundation for transferring to a concert band instrument.
OTHER ENSEMBLES
MARCHING BAND
Mondays 12:00 - 1pm
Marching Band auditions are usually held in February, with rehearsals beginning in March. The auditions and practices take place at Lilburn First Baptist Church. A summer Marching Band camp is also offered, usually off-site to provide practice in field marching. Students auditioning should have at least 1 year of experience on their instrument. Those auditioning should prepare a 1 minute piece to play and be prepared to sight read a small piece provided by the director.
Students joining the marching band who are not currently members of Joyful Noise Homeschool Band NE will also need to sign-up for regular Concert Band class (Intermediate Level or above), as the director will not offer instruction on instruments.
STUDENT REQUIREMENTS: Instrument, uniform, physical ability to participate in marching.
CHORUS (ages 7 and UP)
Mondays 11:00am - 12:00 PM
Chorus is a great way to expand musical skills. During the course of the year students will learn to read music from the printed page, acquire music theory skills, and prepare for Winter and Spring concerts. The chorus will prepare a varied repertoire each semester to minister to our families and community and showcase their individual and collective talents.
We will endeavor to teach the musical and vocal skills necessary to produce a lifelong enjoyment of the creative arts. This includes teaching the fundamentals of proper choral technique (posture, breathing, diction, dynamic control, pitch control, rhythm, etc.) so that singers can sing properly. We desire to create a learning environment that is enjoyable and encouraging for all participants.
Student Requirements: Your own voice, a willing heart, Pencil, 1” black binder and plastic sleeves for music, concert dress (see Guidelines ).
